La historia comienza en Tree Hill, un pequeño pueblo de Carolina del Norte. Lucas y Nathan son dos chicos completamente diferentes, exceptuando su afición por el baloncesto y que son hijos de un mismo padre, Dan. Nathan es el líder del equipo de baloncesto del instituto y proviene de una familia acomodada con su madre Deb y su padre Dan. Por el contrario, Lucas juega al baloncesto en la cancha del rio con sus amigos, fue criado desde su infancia por su madre Karen, dueña de un café local y por su tio Keith, dueño de un taller de mecanica. Keith siendo amigo y ex jugador del entrenador Whitey Durham le pide que una a Lucas al equipo del instituto, debido a sus buenas cualidades como jugador de baloncesto, consigue entrar a los "Ravens", el equipo es capitaneado por Nathan, que ridicualiza a su hermano por sus orígenes humildes, provocando roces entre ambos.
